Brakes

Are some Stop signs easier to run than others? Maybe they’re all runnable. It’s not the same as a stop light is it. A stop sign generally appears on streets in residential areas where traffic ebbs and flows but is not a constant and furious stream. Stop signs are red and usually prominent enough but they’re often ignored in favor of expeditious travel or wantonness toward the minor fixtures of structure in society.

It’s interesting that both stop signs and stop lights are not meant to necessarily deter but rather meant to shift your focus from self to safety. Isn’t the stop sign a reminder that there is much at stake for not considering the whole picture?

In the past I’ve officiated weddings for people who don’t want counseling prior to. Yesterday I refereed a basketball game and a 15-year old girl kept mouthing off until I had to give a technical foul and nearly expunge her from the gym. I believe the words she used were, “F— him,” in reference to me.There are female and male body builders who do it clean and those who do not. There are parents who argue with coaches over their kid’s playing time.

In each of the aforementioned scenarios, the couple, the basketball player, the parents and the cheating body builders are wrong. They are wrong because “wrong” is the result of running a stop sign. Not stopping at a warning indicates a destructive ill regard for how we’ve been created and who created us. It’s bigger than safety. It’s about recognizing that selfishness is an aberration and a defect. Equivocate as we may, we can’t change the structure of the universe to accommodate an attitude that turns the pinnacle of creation (humans) into monstrosities. I don’t do it perfectly but I’m learning to mind the stop signs.

  1. Stop signs can be positive also! Two instances that come to mind is when Daniel wanted to try out as a walk on for the APU football team. I have to reference that he broke his neck in a high school came, he hits ’em hard. The week of try-outs he injured himself at the gym and thus was unable to try-out…Last week Miranda was supposed to compete in a cheer competition and was going to do so with a concussion. The week of practice before she was hit again and did not compete. After researching pediatric concussion, there is a 50/50 chance if you get hit again you could die instantly! Two stop signs, that spared my family from potential death!

  2. Definitely sounds like stop signs that force you to consider a litany of possible outcomes. The stops signs are from God I believe. The Lord is gracious in warning. Maybe Miranda should play Volleyball? She’s tall and they don’t have to catch people.

  3. Stop signs… I learned a valuable lesson. It seems like we’re always in a hurry to get here and there and one of those ways to get from Point A to Point B is to do a “California Stop”. You know of what I’m speaking of. One day, as I was about to enter into an intersection at a stop light as the light turned green, something made me hesitate. It was as if I was told not to step on the gas peddle. I kid you not, 3 seconds, seriously 3 seconds later a car flew crossing the intersection. I watched dumbfounded at what just happened. I realized had I stepped on the gas peddle. The car must have been going 45-50 mph just to get through the light….WOW!!! Was it a God thing that just happened? I believe so with all my heart.

  4. A check up from the neck up. Sooner or later we are forced to pay attention to those signs. I’d be lying if I told you I catch every sign. I catch enough though to help keep me on point.
